The Knesset extends the law on the destruction of stray dogs at the border

On December 9, 2024, the Knesset passed a law on the control of stray animals. According to the new bill, city veterinarians have the right to order the euthanization of stray dogs caught within a radius of 20 km from the border with the Gaza Strip and 10 km in the north. The decision to euthanize should be made four days after capture, and not 10 days, as was previously the case.

The new law extends the temporary provision until March 31, 2025. The explanatory note notes that the problem of stray animals has become especially acute due to the Iron Swords War. Many stray dogs have entered Israel since the outbreak of hostilities, worsening the situation in the border region.

The bill received 32 votes in favor and 13 against. According to the authors of the law, this is a necessary solution to solve the problem of stray animals in the country, especially in the context of increasing tension on the border with the Gaza Strip.
