Syrian opposition forces announced the end of the 24-year rule of President Bashar al-Assad. This happened shortly after the fighters rushed into Damascus after rapidly advancing across the country, according to Al Jazeera's website.
In a statement broadcast live on Syrian national television on Sunday, the group said the tyrannical al-Assad regime had been overthrown and that all prisoners had been released from Damascus' main prison.
The opposition says Assad, whose family ruled Syria for more than 50 years, has fled the capital and his whereabouts remain unknown.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said in a video message that the government is ready to “extend a hand” to the opposition and transfer its powers to the transitional government. Al-Jalili called on Syrian citizens not to damage government property and said he would go to his office in the morning to continue his work.
The head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militant group, Abu Mohamed al-Julani, ordered the fighters not to attack government institutions and services. The opposition also released a video taken by its fighters from Mezzeh airbase in Damascus, which plays a major role in rocket attacks and air raids on opposition territory.
