The Russian-controlled Khmeimim military airport in Latakia refused to accept an Iranian Mahan Air plane flying to Syria. The flight was forced to return to Tehran after being denied landing in Syria. On board, according to sources, there was a cargo of weapons for Hezbollah groups and the Iranian military in Syria.

Israel has expressed threats against the use of Damascus, Aleppo and Beirut airports for the transport of Iranian weapons. Flights of Iranian delegations to Syria were carried out only after agreement with Israel. Those agreements included talks between senior Iranian officials in Damascus last week.

Russia has not given an official comment on this case. The authorities remained silent regarding the refusal to land the Iranian plane at Khmeimim airport.
