In Israel, an “earthquake” occurred in several cities, causing panic among local residents – reasons

On the morning of Saturday, October 26, 2024, an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Haifa. Residents were instructed to go outside to avoid possible injury. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Araba region, south to Caesarea.

Some time later, information appeared in the IDF that the echoes of the earthquake were caused by explosions in Lebanon. In the south of the country, Israeli forces blew up a large weapons depot, prompting an earthquake warning. However, no security threat was found.

The official IDF Twitter posted information about explosions in northern Israel. Despite this, it has been confirmed that there is no security threat as a result of these events.

The Geological Institute, which has deployed the Troyes system, is responsible for warnings about earthquakes in Israel.

If an earthquake occurs in our region, which is recorded by our seismometers, the Troyes system processes the data and “decides” whether it could pose a danger to Israel, what and where, and transmits a signal to the geologist on duty at the center, who decides whether to transmit a warning to the service system rear. There are different criteria, but the time to make a decision is about a couple of seconds, since from the beginning of an earthquake at the epicenter to noticeable shaking of buildings in Israel is only 5-10 seconds (depending on where). Based on the type of signal, an experienced geologist can easily determine whether this is a real earthquake or an “anthropogenic” one.

But it all depends on experience. In this case, it is better to give a false warning than not to warn about a real danger.
Regarding coordination between the IDF and the Home Front Command:

1. The Home Front Command participated in the development of notification criteria, and Troyes uses the Home Front Command application for notification, but the Home Front Command does not participate in the operational decision in each specific case.

2. It is not a fact that the IDF unit that blew up an ammunition depot in Lebanon knew or took into account that the explosion would be so powerful that seismometers would be activated.

3. Geologists at the center usually easily determine that this is an explosion and not an earthquake.

But there are mistakes.
