The United States has imposed enhanced IT sanctions on Russia as part of a global strategy to pressure the aggressor in response to its ongoing war in Ukraine. The measures are aimed at isolating Russia and denying it access to key technological resources that could be used to support both its economy and its war effort.
As reported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraineleading IT companies began to leave the Russian market or limit their services for Russian users from September 12. Among the new sanctions:
- Google blocked the registration of new accounts using Russian numbers and disabled the ability of Russian bloggers to earn money through AdSense;
- Atlassian, Jira, Trello And Confluence completely left the Russian market;
- Service Notionused for organizing work and managing projects, has become unavailable in Russia;
- Miro stopped servicing Russian and Belarusian accounts;
- Microsoft disconnects Russian users from cloud services;
- Slack left the Russian market, ceasing support for the corporate messenger;
- Autodesk and systems CAD ceased their activities in Russia, and SAP And Oracle left the country's ERP market.
We have already written earlier that Israeli website builder Wix to block all Russian accounts due to US sanctions imposed on Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine.
The reason for this is that US sanctions are aimed at denying Russia access to technologies that could enhance its ability to wage war. In the context of full-scale aggression leading to destruction and death of civilians in Ukraine, it is especially important to stop supporting this war machine through any channels, including technological ones. These sanctions show that the world community does not intend to ignore Russia's crimes.
In addition, the new sanctions prohibit American companies from providing IT consulting, design, support, and cloud services to entities in Russia. In this regard, it is important for Israeli companies to think about their actions and potential liability. As Ukrainian civilians continue to die due to Russian aggression, companies that do business with Russia may find themselves under public pressure and facing moral questions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine recalled that back in November 2022, the Yermak-McFaul Sanctions Group proposed introducing IT sanctions against Russia. After lengthy consultations, Ukraine expressed gratitude to its partners for their decisive actions.
“The aggressor state must feel complete international isolation for its crimes,” the Foreign Ministry emphasized.
They also recalled that Google recently banned registration in its services using Russian phone numbers. These are steps that not only economically isolate Russia, but also symbolize global rejection of its actions in the international arena.
At the same time, Russia is considering the creation of an internal Internet, known as “Cheburnet”. This hypothetical program is aimed at disconnecting the Russian segment of the Internet from the global one. Instead of the usual services such as Google, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, Russians will only have access to VKontakte, RuTube, Yandex and Rossgram – the Russian alternative to Instagram. The idea of ”Cheburnet” is supported by a part of the population, which is often called “vaty”, advocating for control over the Internet and approval of the “good old” methods of governance.
These sanctions and restrictions clearly show that any companies cooperating with Russia must think not only about legal but also moral responsibility. In conditions of war and destruction, such as those occurring in Ukraine, conscience requires stopping any supplies and support to the aggressor, even if they may seem profitable in the short term.
