According to data announced in February 2022 and extending until mid-2023, there may be between 300,000 and half a million Russians in Serbia. The latest wave of emigration from Russia concerns mainly Belgrade and Novi Sad, as well as some cities and villages, including Vojvodina. This process is continuous, and those wishing to escape from events in Russia are increasingly choosing Serbia.
The situation is becoming tense as even the “brotherly Serbs” are starting to resent the Russian immigrants. They are accused of preferring to hire only their own compatriots, limiting the access of local residents to employment.
Russians who arrived in Serbia do not want to integrate into the local society, preferring to build their own small community, called “mini-Russia”. They refuse contacts with Serbs and create their own clubs, medical institutions, kindergartens.
For example, 42-year-old Russian Viktor works in Belgrade, not serving local residents, but providing services exclusively to his compatriots. He is engaged in repair and production of furniture for Russian clients.
It has become known that Russian ammunition sold by Serbia fell into the hands of the Ukrainian armed forces through intermediaries from Western countries. This information has caused discontent in the Kremlin, and Russian propagandists have expressed indignation towards Serbia for such supplies.
Thus, Russians in Serbia create their own closed community, maintaining a commitment to their native culture and trying to avoid contact with the local population.
