The journalists' sources say one of the reasons Turkey applied to join the BRICS bloc of countries, which includes Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, is “frustration” over the lack of progress towards the EU.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry and the Turkish presidential administration declined to comment. American authorities warned Turkey of the risk of sanctions for supplying American equipment to Russia. It is also noted that in 2024, Turkey significantly increased its exports of dual-use goods to Russia or neighboring intermediary countries.
