A nationwide strike is underway across Israel. The nationwide strike is being held to put pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and secure the return of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The strike was called by the country's large trade union, known as the Histadrut, following outrage over the killing of six captives in Hamas tunnels under Gaza. Some protesters even blocked a street in Tel Aviv. Here's who is taking part in the strike:
Municipalities including Tel Aviv and Haifa have said they will join the strike, according to the Histadrut list and statements from some cities. The list also includes many government ministries, including branches of the Prime Minister's Office, the Interior Ministry and others. Flights to and from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv have been suspended for two hours from 8:00 a.m.
Hospitals and health centers will operate on a weekend schedule and on an emergency basis, the Histadrut said. The Israel Teachers Union will not join the strike, but school support staff will, which could impact educational institutions.
Kindergartens will remain closed unless there is an essential staff on site, and primary and secondary schools will remain open until 11:45 a.m. only if there is no staff. Israel's largest universities, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University, will join the strike.
Fire and rescue services and special education programs will operate as usual. Tel Aviv Airport has suspended flights as part of the strike.
