Azerbaijan's main allies are Türkiye and Israel. Recently, Azerbaijan has also begun to move closer to Moscow.

There are many reasons for this, writes Vladimir Kravchenko in his article “Enemy, Friend, Or So? Who is Azerbaijan for Us After Putin's Visit.”

Director of the Center for Middle East Studies Igor Semivolos noted that one of the main reasons for the rapprochement between Azerbaijan and Russia was the desire of the Baku leadership to reduce the risks associated with the problem of the “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic”. Azerbaijan hoped to use the Russian Federation to restore its territorial integrity. Also, resentment towards the West for insufficient support for Baku in the issue of returning control over Karabakh became another reason.

Mikhail Gonchar, President of the Strategy XXI Center for Global Studies, emphasized that the Azerbaijani leadership is pursuing a policy based on pragmatism. Baku seeks to obtain maximum benefit for its country, especially in resolving the Karabakh problem. Azerbaijan prefers to develop relations with Ankara, Moscow and Beijing, rather than with Brussels and Washington.

The North-South transport corridor project has played a significant role in bringing Baku and Moscow closer together. For Azerbaijan, this project is a tool for realizing transit potential and increasing the country's income. Despite Russia's influence, Azerbaijan does not seek to get too close to Moscow, so as not to provoke a negative reaction from the West.

This month, Russian President Putin visited Azerbaijan. The day after his visit, Baku applied to join BRICS, an organization that positions itself as an alternative to the European Union and other Western economic blocs.
