US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke about the preparation of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. According to her, this moment is “just around the corner.” The UN Security Council should put pressure on the Palestinian group Hamas to accept the proposal agreed upon with Israel. This information is reported by Reuters.
Thomas-Greenfield said the U.S.-Qatar-Egypt proposal put forward last week is consistent with a plan endorsed by President Joe Biden in May and approved by the UN Security Council in June. “Israel has agreed to the transition. Now Hamas needs to do the same. We as members of the council need to speak with one voice and use our leverage to get Hamas to accept the proposal,” Thomas-Greenfield said.
The talks have been hampered by differences over Israel’s future military presence in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners, a demand Israel made after Hamas accepted Biden’s proposal in May. “This is a critical moment for the ceasefire negotiations and for the region, and each council member must send clear signals to other actors in the region to avoid actions that could derail the agreement,” Thomas-Greenfield said.
Let's accept Israel has accepted the United States' offer to release the hostages. Now the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas must do the same. This was announced by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to Israel.
