If the current conflict between Israel and Iran and their allies (Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis) goes beyond tit-for-tat and escalates into a full-scale war that Israel cannot handle alone for long, President Biden will face a decision that will define his presidency.
He will be faced with a choice: join the war with Iran along with Israel and destroy Tehran’s nuclear program, which is a vital component of Iran’s strategic network in the region, which Iran has been building with the aim of displacing America as the most influential power in the Middle East and launching thousands of strikes against Israel with its allies.
But America must be careful about the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas has pointed out that it is necessary to ask why Netanyahu chose to assassinate Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran now, during sensitive hostage negotiations. One way to exclude Hamas from political influence and isolate Iran in the region is to support a more moderate alternative, such as the Palestinian Authority, a party to the Oslo Accords that cooperates daily with Israel to curb violence in the West Bank.
